CARMEN SABATINO, We recorded this episode in the Mediterranean Market and Grill, in Modesto, California between 10 and midnight. It is not your typical Timelines of Success episode, but it has many teaching points. Carmen was a teacher for 30 years, an entrepreneur and the Mayor of Modesto, California. He ran many times for office and eventually his time came and he won as a populist. As Mayor, he left a legacy of always standing up for the average guy, the citizens of Modesto . So without further ado, let’s get right into the conversation with Carmen.
BLUF: You just have to keep trying. If you lay down, you die.
BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT QUESTIONS:
- Are you a MAC or PC? PCs run Carmen’s restaurant systems from the cash register to the bookkeeper.
- What is your favorite technology, hardware or software? http://www.iconstituent.com/ (Hopefully Carem sned this link out to his list!)
- What is your favorite quote? Written opinion of Prosecutorial Abuse. Robert Jackson, United States Attorney General
- What are your favorite books? Truman Biography, David McCullough
- What is the best advice you have ever received? Carmen’s Father told him that he should look at other people and see what mistakes they made and learn from them. There is some other advice from a political perspective, “Don’t ask a question you don’t know the answer to.”
MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY: Think twice about entering politics and make sure that you are in it for the right reasons. You will need a thick skin and if you own your own business, it will probably suffer; other than that go for it. Looking at Carmen, he is a hard worker. He has put and still puts in long hours in to his restaurant and he has a passion for politics.
